WHAT IS A “HEALING CRISIS”?
The Herxheimer reaction (also known as Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction or herx) occurs when the body is detoxifying too rapidly and toxins are being released faster than the body can eliminate them. When this occurs, one will suffer from headaches, nausea, vomiting, and malaise. This is a temporary phase in detox programs, but can be severe and deter one undergoing one from reaching their intended goals. The person may confuse this experience with bad health and believe it is getting worse.
Some practices believed to minimize the Herxheimer Reaction:
If the Herxheimer reaction occurs during a detox program, its intensity should be lessened. Any doses of herbs should be lessened (and definitely not increased). The more toxins there are to eliminate, the sicker one is when they come out. Discomfort should lessen when toxins are purged and health is restored again.
